Eastern Kentucky Flooding Disaster Recovery Continues

AppalReD, in conjunction with the Kentucky Bar Association and the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, is ready and able to assist Eastern Kentucky flood victims with legal services. Individuals needing assistance should call 1-844-478-0099 during business hours Monday through Friday.

Volunteer Opportunity: Pro Bono

If you are interested in providing pro bono assistance directly to flood victims, we recommend signing up as a volunteer with AppalReD on their website as they provide support for handling cases that may be outside of your typical practice area. Additionally, legal services organizations often offer legal professional liability coverage for those cases the lawyer handles on the organizations’ behalf. As a LMICK insured, your policy will generally cover your pro bono work. However, not all policies from all carriers are the same (and not all volunteer attorneys carry insurance). Always make sure your pro bono cases are covered (and with appropriate limits). For coverage questions under your LMICK policy, please contact us at 502-568-6100.

Volunteer Opportunity: Supporting the Legal Community

For those interested in supporting members of the legal community impacted by the flood, please consider the Kentucky Bar Association’s SOLACE program. Learn more about the program in our wellness section, below!

Practice Tips

Practical Tips in Cybersecurity Series #2:

Our first installment was a Cybersecurity Primer from the cyber resource center available to LMICK Insureds. In the second installment, we take a look at risk assessments. This webinar provides a great introduction to the who, what, when, where, why, and how of risk assessments. The presentation slides are available, here, and corresponding recommendations for consideration are available, here.

Did you know? Your LMICK policy includes access to several cyber security risk management resources and some cyber coverage free of charge. What is Your File Retention Policy?

Following a recent presentation on disaster preparedness, we were asked about best practices for file retention. Although much of the details of retention depends on the firm’s practice and the facts of each case, the Kentucky Bar Association Ethics Committee provides guidelines in Formal Ethics Opinion E-436. Check out our recommendations based on that opinion, including some practical tips!

Kentucky Bar Association Launches New SOLACE Program

The KBA has announced the launch of the new SOLACE (Support of Lawyers/Legal Personnel All Concern Encouraged) program. This program will provide a network of volunteers ready to help an attorney or other member of the legal community with non-monetary needs in times of crisis, whether natural disaster, illness, or other emergency. The program is currently working to pair up volunteers with victims of the Eastern Kentucky floods and will continue to expand as the need arises. Click here for more information about how to volunteer or request assistance.

How Your Leadership Style Can Support Employee Well-Being

As we prepared LMICK’s Third Quarter CLE on Effective Supervision (now available to insureds on-demand), we discovered a fantastic article exploring how the best managers utilized coaching techniques to support their team. Managers often resort to fixing issues for employees. However, “over-relying on fixing constrains [their] ability to lead and robs [the] team members of growth opportunities. … As a result, many managers get overwhelmed with responsibilities and burn out.” Anita Hossain Choudhry and Mindy Zhang walk readers through tools leaders can add to their toolkit that not only support team member growth but can also help prevent manager burnout.

Call or Text 988 for Suicide and Mental Health Crisis Assistance

The new 988 Suicide and Crisis Line is live in Kentucky and all bordering states. A recent NPR article discussed the new hotline, stating “[l]awmakers and mental health advocates also see this launch as an opportunity to transform the mental health care system and make care easily accessible everywhere in the United States.” For a deeper dive into the crisis of suicide—including risk factors and prevention strategies—look for Facing Suicide on your local PBS station starting September 13th.
