LMICK Minute - Issue #8

Lawyers Mutual Insureds,

On July, 23, 2020, the Kentucky Justice Association (KJA) is presenting the “Trial Lawyers Implicit Bias Zoom Program” featuring speaker Pastor Edward L. Palmer, Sr. The program runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and costs only $50.00, for all attendees (KJA members or non KJA members), for 3 hours of continuing legal education credit – a great bargain. Your registration fee will go to support one of two charities that you designate when you register. Detailed information about the program and a link to the registration page can be found below for your convenience.

We are proud to be the exclusive sponsor of this important presentation being offered at a critical time in our nation’s history. Like you, we’ve been watching what is going on in our country and around the world and wondering what this moment of social unrest demands of us – of LMICK – of lawyers.

This is not the first time – nor will it be the last – that we find ourselves at a crossroads as both a people and a country with choices to make, wrongs to make right, and peace to broker. At every similar inflection point in the country’s history, such as the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements, lawyers have been leaders in bringing about the necessary change. As a company dedicated to supporting lawyers, LMICK is committed to assisting lawyers who are working for change and justice. To that end, we are exploring ways that LMICK can further support programs such as this one being offered by KJA, encourage dialogue and communication around issues of race, increase diversity in our profession, and champion lawyers working for lasting change.

Trial Lawyers Implicit Bias Zoom Program

July 23, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST
3 Hours of CLE in Kentucky (check with your state)
Speaker: Pastor Edward L. Palmer Sr.

Recognizing racial bias is the beginning. Recent events are transforming society. Trial lawyers must come to terms with racial bias and understand it. Your success is directly related to how you deal with your clients, jurors, witnesses and the courts by understanding implicit bias. This dynamic program is designed to give lawyers the tools to begin to recognize and deal with implicit bias in your practices, throughout the justice system, and beyond. Silence is complicity. Trial lawyers must be in the conversation.

Pastor Ed is a co-pastor with his wife Elizabeth Palmer for The Sign of the Dove Church located in Radcliff, Kentucky. He is a Certified Diversity Trainer and works to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. He is a certified Racial and Ethnic Disparities Capstone Project Fellow through the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University. He chairs the Kentucky State Inner-Agency Council’s Diversity Standing Committee, Chair of the National Coalition For Juvenile Justice. Pastor Palmer is currently serving his fifth term as a Radcliff City Councilman.
